A pair of six-fold paper screens painted in ink and colour on a gold and buff ground.
The right hand screen shows a river-side tea house with numerous male figures enjoying such pleasures as smoking, music and games of Sugoroku (Japanese backgammon). The season is spring and several dancers, one holding a sprig of cherry blossom, perform on the river banks.
The left hand screen shows the entrance to 'yujo kabuki' or 'prostitute kabuki' with patrons paying the gatekeeper as they enter the riverside theatre. The audience, seated on red mats, are enjoying a performance of Okuni Kabuki on a raised stage.
