Private collection, China
A two-fold paper screen painted in ink and colour on a gold ground with the Uji River and its famous bridge. The left hand side of the screen depicts a weeping willow on a river bank with jakago (rock-filled baskets) which prevent erosion. The scene is interspersed with clouds decorated in moriage (raised design) of kiku (chrysanthemum) and the kiri mon (paulownia leaf family crest) of the Ashikaga family. A silver moon sits among hilltops in the distance.
Japan, 17th century, Edo period.
