A pair of six-fold paper screens depicting the engawa (verandah) of a grand mansion with shoji and painted fusuma (sliding doors) beside an internal garden with trees and flowers.

Transition of the four seasons from spring to winter is depicted via the motifs: spring and summer represented by sakura (cherry blossoms) and vibrant green pine and other verdant plants in the garden; autumn and winter represented by asagao (morning glory) and chidori (plover) flying over drying fishing nets painted on the fusuma doors respectively.

Ink, colour, gold, silver and gold leaf on paper; details in moriage (raised design).

Hasegawa School, Japan 17th century, Edo period.
